Distribution Grid Electrification Model 2025 Findings
Overview
The Public Advocates Office at the California Public Utilities Commission has undertaken a new study examining the costs of upgrading the distribution grids of California's three largest investor-owned electric utilities (IOUs) to meet the state's transportation electrification goals.
The Distribution Grid Electrification Model 2025 (DGEM 2025) updates and expands upon our similar 2023 study and preliminary results. It estimates the total cost by 2040 of upgrading IOU distribution grids to support electrification, assesses the potential impact on electric rates, and explores how results vary under different levels of building electrification and electric vehicle charging management.
